Following on from the changing pricing structures of subtitle translation across the captioning industry, we have introduced new set rates for direct subtitling from source into target language.
In response to client demand, we now provide services to create captions which directly translate source to target language at a set ‘per video minute’ rate. This is a great option for clients working around tight budgets, keeping costs down and turnaround times fast, while still working with human only captioning and translation services.
Why have we changed our foreign subtitling approach?
Historically, at Capital Captions, we have used a translation rate based on ‘per word’ translation costs. Subtitling in source language and subsequently translating on a per word basis is known to be the most accurate way of translating subtitles. However, there is a downside to this approach. A word count can only be ascertained once the source language caption file has been created and for this reason, it can be difficult for clients to be sure if our caption translation services fit within their budget.

Below are some of the benefits to this cost structure and some of the basic rates explained.
SUBTITLING FOREIGN CAPTIONS DIRECTLY (PER VIDEO MINUTE COST)
PROS
- Having a set price for foreign captions and translations can be crucial for budgeting at the start of a project.
- Captioning a film directly into a foreign language means using only one translator/subtitler. This means a faster turnaround can often be achieved.
- Where source language subtitles aren’t required, subtitling directly into target language can keep costs down.
CONS
- Subtitling directly into a foreign language means there will be no subtitle file created in source language, which can be useful as a reference, should the video be edited later on.
- Not all translators work with subtitling. If you require foreign subtitles in multiple languages, working on ‘per word’ translations from a source language file is often a faster and cheaper option as more translators will be available.
- Captioning directly into a target language can be slightly less accurate than translating per word if you are looking for a more verbatim style.
