There are many different types of transcription and translation that can come in useful or downright essential when it comes to video production. When we talk about video transcription, we often consider subtitles or script writing, but one of the most important and useful video transcription services is transcription of rushes.
The term ‘rushes’ refers to the raw footage use for video production. Even for short videos which when complete would total minutes or even seconds, raw footage can easily last for a few hours. Some rushes will contain nothing but long shots or close-ups or people, items or places. Others will include endless reams of repeated speech with extra takes to ensure everything is perfect. Some rushes can even consist only of a stationary camera held in a busy area, left on record in order to find naturally occurring footage of some interesting dialogue. They may also consist of foreign speech outside of the primary language where a filmmaker requires translation to understand what has actually been recorded!
Whatever rushes may include, in order to sift through mistakes and unnecessary footage, video transcription services and translation are often essential.
Typically, video producers, editors and filmmakers will work extensively on a regular basis with rushes. Cutting, chopping, ordering and editing a video is a time consuming process and raw footage is only the beginning. However, alongside producers, the research industry is known for also working with raw footage. Having rushes transcribed to be used as a reference to find useful parts of interviews and/or locate certain speeches is an incredibly useful research tool. Script writers, subtitlers and video producers may also need to work with rushes when it comes to foreign videos. This is typically the case where the dialect of the filmmaker differs from the language spoken within a video.
We work regularly with transcribing rushes to assist with video editing. We provide transcripts which are typically time coded and include speaker names to help with referencing. On request, our rushes transcription services will also include descriptions of visual elements, shots and actions within a video. We provide urgent rushes transcription services with turnarounds as low as within 4 hours. If you are on a budget we also offer a budget transcription service with turnaround times of typically 48-72 hours. We work with foreign transcription in a number of languages including for videos in French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese and more.
If you need to edit a video that’s in a foreign language, the first step is understanding what’s being said. We offer two options in terms of working with translating rushes. We can provide a time coded transcript which is then translated, or we can work directly with subtitling. Writing subtitles at the rushes stage can be quite useful as it’s the most accurate way to time a transcription. Just be aware that once the video is cut and edited, the subtitle timings and text may need to be altered unless they are burned in. We work with video translation services for rushes in a huge variety of languages including French, German, Spanish and more.
