Current global events have exponentially ramped up the use of online video content for e-learning which means having Subtitles for Education content is getting more important. Many children and young people in primary, secondary and further education, are being educated from home. This has led to an enormous uptake in the use of e-learning sites and engagement with educational videos. Additionally, with staff furloughed and working from home, extra time and resources has helped motivation for many people to take on extra learning to either change career or improve their career prospects.
At Capital Captions, we provide subtitles for education services in the following formats.
Since remote learning has taken off over the past year, Bitesize videos have fast become an excellent way to engage children and adolescents with informative, engaging online content to help them learn. Each video on the Bitesize platform requires a closed caption file in EBU-TT-D format, written to very specific guidelines. High quality captions ensure full content accessibility for all viewers and it’s an area that we at Capital Captions specialise in. Alongside English, many Bitesize videos are also published in Welsh Gaelic and we are happy to work to provide subtitles also in this language.
Especially for older learners, holding online lessons has become very popular. Having a live lesson online can mean that students can give immediate feedback, ask questions and engage more with educational content. Whilst we don’t currently work with live captioning for services such as these, we do work with captioning recorded Zoom, Teams and Skype content.
Still the most commonly used subtitle format, we supply well written, impeccably timed SRT files in a huge number of different languages. With many universities taking on international students, subtitle translation can be incredibly useful in ensuring full content accessibility for all learners. Whether you would prefer to have subtitles in which your viewers can choose their target language or subtitles that display permanently, we can help.
Whilst in an ideal world, all remote learners should have access to a laptop, this isn’t always the case. Often content may be viewed on a tablet or even a smartphone. In households with multiple student learners, it may be the case that sound needs to be turned off on devices so as to avoid cross interference.
It also may be the case that a device doesn’t allow content to be easily heard. Where this is the case, subtitle burning onto videos is a great way to make sure subtitles can be read. Burning subtitles (sometimes referred to as embedding) means that captions will display permanently. It also means that subtitles can be tailored in terms of their size according to where they are being viewed. For instance, if you are watching a video on your smartphone, you will inevitably need subtitles to be larger than if you are watching on a 60 inch television!
