When starting out as a feature film or documentary producer, broadcaster requirements can be overwhelming. With new regulations coming in at an ever-increasing rate, whether it’s closed captioning, audio description or translation that you require, at Capital Captions, we have it all covered. As a feature film and documentary subtitling company we subtitle countless films and documentaries every year.
We take pride in the quality of our services. We specialise in catering to Deaf and Hard of Hearing audiences and whatever specifications required for your project.
At Capital Captions we can provide what is needed under any specifications.
Preferred subtitles for Amazon are typically DFXP, TTML or SRT formats. In addition to dialogue, captions for Amazon should include elements for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing such as sound effects, speaker identification and formatting to indicate offscreen speech and/or narration.
When closed captioning for Netflix in all languages except Japanese, the TTML format should be used. Captions should include elements for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and forced narrative is also very important for multilingual shows or translated onscreen graphics.
When providing closed captions for BBC projects, the EBU-TT format should be used for broadcast and EBU-TT-D for VoD content streamed through iPlayer. EBU-TT is a variation of the TTML format. There are a number of specifications that need to be adhered to when it comes to captioning for UK broadcast and for BBC shows in terms of both accessibility and formatting limitations.
A documentary film maker has to consider what would make the best visual impact for the film.
Shows distributed in the USA should typically have subtitles in SCC, CAP or STL. These formats have different specifications so it’s important to understand which is needed prior to starting work. When subtitles are supplied for both US and UK broadcast, changes should be made between US and UK spellings. Metric/imperial measurements and other factors should also be considered.
Videos streaming through commonly used sites such as YouTube and Vimeo, SRT is the most popular and highly compatible format. SRT format allows subtitle creators more freedom in terms of character limits, but there are no options for styling captions. Subtitles in SRT will always display to the default style set on the media site or player.
As a professional feature film and documentary subtitling company we are highly experienced in providing high quality, affordable closed captioning services for content distributed online, VOD and broadcast and are happy to answer any questions prior to going ahead with projects.
