Working within online subtitling services is hard work. Work can be irregular with unsociable hours and sifting pedantically through hour of hour of video can be mentally exhausting. Outside of my career within subtitling services and translation, I have always had a strong interest in movies. But as with any nine to five job, working with the same medium day by day can become monotonous. With the holiday season soon approaching, Capital Captions and our clients will be taking some time out from the daily grind in favour of some R&R. And what better way to relax over the Christmas season than with a favourite Christmas movie (with or without subtitles).
So without further ado, here are some of my personal favourite Christmas movies. Personally, I haven’t subtitled one of them. But who knows, with many films now being remastered in 4K, with bonus footage, I can always dream…
-
Nightmare Before Christmas
Whilst it’s debateable just how ‘Christmassy’ Nightmare Before Christmas is, it’s still one of my favourites. Taking a look at the darker side of holidays from the perspective of Halloween, it stands out from any other Christmas movie.
-
Jingle All the Way
One of the cheesiest Christmas movies of all time. I’m a big fan of Arnold Schwarzenegger movies and watching a guy as macho as Arnie running around looking for a children’s toy never fails to cheer me up on a dark December evening.
-
Home Alone
Being around the same age as Macaulay Caulkin, I remember watching Home Alone as a child and thinking Kevin McAllister was the coolest kid ever. Nowadays, I enjoy the movie from an adult perspective and watching my son dreaming up ideas of what he would do in Kevin’s shoes.
-
Wallace and Gromit (The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and Curse of the Were Rabbit)
Though Wallace and Gromit movies aren’t technically Christmas themed, they are broadcast every single Christmas. Being a fan of traditional stop motion animation, there is so much charm to the Wallace and Gromit stories. Plus it’s always great to find Shaun the Sheep and Gromit novelty gifts for family.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Unlike many Christmas films, it’s sometimes easy to forget that some of the jokes and themes in this movie are pretty adult oriented. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation is without a doubt, the funniest Christmas movie ever made. With familiar problems cropping up in the movie (broken Christmas lights, irritating distant relatives, financial stress and sledding), there’s something for us all to cling onto in reminiscence.
So that’s it for our all time favourite Christmas movies
